Suspension Culture of Stem Callus Cells of Panax Ginseng

  • Suspension culture of stem callus cells of Panax ginseng was carried out in 10L. rotating bottles. the growth rate of cells was 21-25g/L/day (fresh weight) and it could be increased to 74g/L/day by continuous culture. The final yield was 12g/L (dry weight). When a simplified culture medium was used, the production cost was reduced to 1/5, the yeild of cells and the crude ginsenoside content were not affected. In addition, it has been observed that when culture of successive generation continued for 33 months, the growth rate of cells was about 10 times heigher, but the crude ginsenoside content was decreased to about one-third, which is about the same as that of the crude drug (6.0%). The suspension culture medium also contained a certain amount of crude ginsenosides.
